New Yorker  Cartoonist, Maine Painter

A local artist with a national reputation, Bill Woodman occupies a unique position within Maine’s artistic landscape. Born in Bangor in 1936, Bill joined the Navy, and then moved to New York City to begin his cartooning career. Over the next four decades, Bill’s cartoons were featured in major publications ranging from the National Lampoon to Esquire, Barron's, and The New York Times. He had a longstanding contract with Playboy and became known as one of The New Yorker's classic cartoonists. Since returning to Maine in 2000, Bill has created cartoons for Down East Magazine and devoted himself to painting plein-air landscapes. His paintings capture the essence of Maine, depicting its rocky coastlines and historic downtowns in vibrant watercolor.
